Following the High Level Conference on Business and Biodiversity in Lisbon in November 2007, the European Commission were required to follow up from the conference by providing financial and technical support for further developing an EU-wide initiative on Business and Biodiversity.
The Business and Biodiversity Initiative (BBI) seeks to raise awareness of the strong competitive advantage to be gained by conserving biodiversity within Europe; to promote the use of a wide range of market mechanisms, corporate responsibility and regulatory schemes to conserve biodiversity; to support large and small businesses with operational tools for biodiversity conservation and measuring their performance in meaningful ways; and to encourage new incentives to develop and strengthen partnerships between companies and governments at all levels, from NGOs and academia.
A consortium of partners (The World Conservation Union- IUCN, European Centre for Nature Conservation- ECNC and PricewaterhouseCoopers- PWC) started work on this initiative in late 2009.
